Tallow Talk Tuesday #5: Tallow & Eczema - Why This Simple Ingredient Supports the Skin Barrier

Tallow & Eczema: Why This Simple Ingredient Supports the Skin Barrier

Tallow Talk Tuesday • Made New Naturals

If your family is walking through the challenges of eczema—dry, itchy, irritated skin that just never seems to settle—you are not alone. Our family has been there too, and that journey is what led me to start making tallow-based skincare in my own kitchen.

At Made New Naturals, I keep ingredients simple and recognizable on purpose. Less ingredients. More nourishment. Tallow has become one of my favorite tools for supporting sensitive, eczema-prone skin in a gentle, real-ingredient way.

What Is Really Happening With Eczema?

Eczema is more than “just dry skin.” It is a sign that the skin barrier is compromised. When that protective barrier is weakened, the skin struggles to:

  • Hold onto moisture
  • Protect against irritants and allergens
  • Calm redness, itchiness, and inflammation
  • Repair itself efficiently

This is why you might feel temporary relief from many lotions and creams, but the dryness and irritation keep coming back. The barrier needs real support, not just a quick “coat” of moisture.

Why Tallow Can Be So Helpful for Eczema

Tallow is rendered beef fat, and its natural fatty acid profile is remarkably similar to the oils our own skin produces. That means our skin often “recognizes” tallow and can use it effectively to support barrier function.

For eczema-prone skin, tallow can help:

  • Nourish the skin barrier with rich, skin-compatible fats
  • Lock in moisture without relying on synthetic fillers or fragrances
  • Provide a soothing, protective layer over dry, irritated areas
  • Complement a simple, low-ingredient skincare routine that avoids unnecessary triggers

In our home, tallow became a turning point when nothing else seemed to help my children’s sensitive skin. That experience is what grew into Made New Naturals and the products I now make for other families.

How I Like to Use Tallow for Eczema-Prone Skin

Every family and every skin story is unique, but here are some gentle ways you can incorporate tallow into an eczema-friendly routine:

  1. Patch Test First
Try a small amount of tallow balm on a small area of skin and watch how it responds over 24–48 hours.
  2. Apply to Clean, Slightly Damp Skin
After a lukewarm bath or gentle cleanse (no harsh soaps or fragrances), pat the skin almost dry and then apply a thin layer of tallow balm. Damp skin helps lock in extra moisture.
  3. Use Consistently
Eczema often needs steady, consistent support. Applying a rich balm 1–2 times per day can help the skin barrier rebuild over time.
  4. Keep the Routine Simple
Many eczema flares are aggravated by “too much:” too many products, fragrances, and additives. Sticking with minimal, real ingredients is often more supportive.

As always, this is not medical advice. If you have concerns about eczema, allergies, or infections, please consult your healthcare provider.

Less Ingredients. More Nourishment.

My heart behind Made New Naturals is to serve families who are searching for something gentler and cleaner for their skin. Every product I make is rooted in:

  • Simple, real ingredients you can actually read and recognize
  • No fragrance oils and no unnecessary fillers
  • Family-focused formulas designed with sensitive skin in mind
  • A faith-driven mission that includes a Bible verse in every order as a reminder of the hope we have in Jesus

If you are currently walking through eczema with yourself or your kids, know that I see you, and I’ve been there too. My prayer is that these products, and the information I share, can be a small part of your healing journey.
